Shoichi Hasegawa
Shoichi Hasegawa is a mixed-media painter, printmaker, and draftsman.
A student at the Kokuga Institute in Tokyo, he later studied printmaking at Stanley William Hayter's renowned Atelier 17 in Paris, where he arrived in 1961.
An abstract artist, Hasegawa creates a unique synthesis of East Asian calligraphy, the traditional symbolism of forms and colors, and contemporary Western artistic expression. On richly colored, gestural backgrounds, decorative graphic motifs are etched in white, drawing inspiration from the tradition of Japanese folk imagery.
